About Bristol and Weston Hospitals Charity

Bristol and Weston Hospitals Charity (BWHC) support Bristol’s city‑centre hospitals and Weston General Hospital by funding improvements to patient care and staff wellbeing. As a modern and growing charity, BWHC needed an updated, secure, cloud‑first IT environment.

Background

The charity aimed to retire unsupported legacy servers and reduce technical debt while transitioning to a secure cloud environment aligned with NHS and Cyber Essentials standards. They needed to redevelop and migrate a bespoke application into Azure, enable secure hybrid working through improved accessibility and role‑based permissions, and bring together multiple sources of data into a structured, unified SharePoint platform.

Requirements

  • Decommission unsupported legacy servers and reduce technical debt.
  • Migrate to a modern cloud environment aligned with NHS and Cyber Essentials standards.
  • Migrate a bespoke application to Azure Cloud Infrastructure.
  • Enable secure hybrid working with improved accessibility and role-based permissions.
  • Consolidate multiple data sources into a structured, secure SharePoint platform.

Solutions Delivered

1. Azure Hosting for Bespoke Application
The charity operated on a custom-built application previously hosted on legacy on‑premise servers. CAB delivered the following:

  • Worked closely with third party to migrate bespoke application to Azure Cloud Infrastructure.
  • Deploy it into a dedicated Azure Virtual Desktop environment for anywhere access.
  • Improve stability, performance, and access for remote users.
  • Implement role-based security controls and Cyber Essentials aligned configurations.
  • This approach removed dependency on legacy server hardware and provided a scalable, supportable cloud‑based solution.

2. SharePoint Modernisation & Data Migration
To support hybrid working and create a single source of truth, CAB built a new modern SharePoint environment and:

  • Migrated data from multiple onsite network drives.
  • Consolidated and rebuilt legacy SharePoint sites.
  • Introduced role-based permissions, improving governance.
  • Delivered improved collaboration and security features.
  • Provided staff with the ability to work anywhere, on any device.
  • SharePoint now acts as a secure hub for documentation, workflows, and collaboration across the charity.
